Golden Retriever

Golden RetrieverOne of the most friendly and intelligent canine breeds, the Golden Retriever is a favorite choice for a family pet and personal companion. Its golden-hued coat and panting 'grin' are instantly recognizable, and its character has been described as reliable, loyal and loving. A wonderful addition to homes with people of all ages and lifestyles, the golden retriever is a joy to be around.

Originally the golden retriever was bred from a cross of the Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct) and the original Yellow Retriever by Lord Tweedmouth in the late 1800s in Scotland. With later strains of Irish Setter and Bloodhound breeds, the Golden Retriever is now known worldwide as the gentle and energetic breed that it is.

The Golden Retriever’s origin as a gun dog used for retrieving waterfowl shows in its need for regular walks or runs daily outside. The golden retriever is a physically active breed and will become restless with a sedentary lifestyle. However, with its love of eating, the golden retriever will quickly gain weight if not kept in check. Pre-apportioned food rations based on the dog’s activity level are advised to keep golden retrievers healthy and fit.

Dog collars with personalized insignia stating the animal's name, home address and phone number to call should the animal become lost are advisable, as this breed has the instinctive tendency to roam. Custom dog collars with side release buckles are recommended for easy one handed release and to prevent accidental opening of the clasp.

The average life span of a Golden Retriever is 11 to 11 ½ years. While generally accounted to be a healthy and energetic breed, they are at risk for the genetic disorder of hip dysplasia and all pedigree puppies should be examined for hip disease.

Lastly, due to their lustrous signature golden coats, the golden retriever requires regular grooming and baths for optimum health. Bathing bi-monthly is advised, along with a thorough grooming once a week. Their fur coats are water repellant and double layered for warmth. Though most of the time shedding is minimal, the breed does go through a seasonal heavy shedding period twice a year. Severe loss of fur resulting in bald patches may be caused by stress or sickness. The Golden Retriever that is well-cared for will provide a family with love, loyalty, fun, and protection.
