The German Wirehaired Pointer was bred using several different dog breeds to obtain a multi-purpose hunting dog. Some of the dogs used in the beginning of the breeding process are the German Shorthair, the Griffon, the Pudelpointer, and the Stichelhaar. These breeds are mixes bred from Foxhounds, Pointers and Poodles. The breeders continued working with these three breeds until they had the German Wirehaired Pointer.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is noted for its special outer coat. Flat, harsh, coarse, and wiry, the fur is not very soft for petting but protects the dog as it runs through the woods hunting. It provides an effective barrier against water and bad weather. In all German Wirehaired Pointers, the fur coat is white and liver in color. Any other coloring would be a disqualifier in a dog show.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is also well-known for its loving and dependable nature. It bonds readily to its owners and aims to please. But these dogs require consistent exercise or regular engagement in work, as they have a good deal of energy and motivation.

The fur of the German Wirehaired Pointer requires some minimal grooming and it does shed a little bit throughout the year. At 22 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder, the breed is a medium size, but these dogs are built sturdy and swift. Its features are balanced with a ratio of length to height of 10:9.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a breed of dog that while not generally too open with strangers, is not unfriendly with them. And these dogs bond rather quickly to new companions. This breed learns well and loves to please their owners and to have fun. The German Wirehaired Pointer makes a great addition to almost any family.
