The Chinese Shar-Pei originated as a breed in China, built for working farms of ancient times. Shar-Peis are thus talented at catching vermin, guarding perimeters, herding, and tracking.

The Chinese farmers also valued the breed for their sturdy build, strong stature, and their black-tinted scowling mouth. They believed that such an appearance would help ward off evil spirits. With a head reminiscent of the hippopotamus, the Chinese Shar-Pei lives up to its reputation of an imposing presence.

The name “Shar-Pei” refers to the dog's sandy coat, which is harsh and tends to stand up in places. But other solid colors and sable are common for the breed. The dog’s face is wrinkled, giving him a distinctive wizened look.

Standing 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder, the Chinese Shar-Pei weighs between 45 and 60 pounds. Still sought after by today's families for hunting and guarding skills, the breed is loyal to its owners. However, they do require early obedience training as they tend to be on the stubborn side.

The Chinese Shar-Pei may literally turn up its nose at strangers, but loves and watches over its family. Dignified, proud, and often independent, Shar-Peis can make a great addition of personality to a family. They do need some minimal grooming and, due to the large and unusual shape of the head, a special collar is recommended for the breed.
