A small and unique-looking breed, the Chinese Crested is a tiny dog standing no more than eleven inches tall at the shoulders. The hairless variety actually does have some hair, but only on its head, tail, and feet, making the dog appear to be wearing socks and a long wig.

The Powderpuff is completely covered with a very soft straight coat. These dogs, much like their tiny companions, Chihuahuas, come in any number of colors and color combinations.

The origins are not certain, but it is believed that the Chinese Crested originated from African hairless dogs, brought aboard Chinese ships to hunt rodents. They can be found in European art dating back to the mid-1800s and began competing in dog shows in the late 1800s.

The hairless variety is unfortunately prone to skin conditions, sunburns, and allergies. Thus, they require sunblock or a weather-appropriate cover for going outdoors. Because they shed so little hair, they also shed much less dander, making them a preferred breed for people with allergies.

In families, the Chinese Crested is playful, cheerful, and fun-loving. But it is important, due to their tiny size and timid nature, that the children remember to be gentle. This breed also thrives with adult owners. Leash-walking should be kept to a mild pace, with the possibility of them needing to be carried for longer walks.
