The Chihuahua is one of the best-known dogs in the world. Famous for its small size, disproportionately large ears, and great big eyes, these dogs have starred in numerous movies such “Legally Blond,” “Chihuahua,” and “Beverly Hills Chihuahua.”

Even though they tend to be nervous and jumpy, they are actually very intelligent. The earliest known origin of the Chihuahua comes from the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. It is speculated that these dogs are descendants of the Fennec Fox, characteristic for its large eyes and ears. They have been used in religious ceremonies and for many years have been family dogs for the upper class.

As long as children are gentle and relatively calm, Chihuahuas are well-suited to life with young families. But they also enjoy living with quiet adults as well. They do not need much exercise, but do need protection from the elements, as their ears release body heat rapidly and their coats are thin.

Short-haired Chihuahuas need very little brushing and even long-coated Chihuahuas need only minimal grooming. Weighing in at no more than six pounds, they are also inexpensive to feed. In fact, Chihuahuas are so small they are often toted around by their owners, making them official purse dogs.

The Chihuahua has a terrier-like personality and often thinks he is bigger than he is, taking on dogs much larger and far more powerful. Colors vary widely, with this breed. Walks should be at a leisure pace, as their little legs struggle to keep up, but they do well on a leash. The Chihuahua can be a pleasant and affectionate companion for the right family.
