The Brittany is an elegant breed with a keen alert pose. Its short tail points out and its head is held high, putting off the appearance of standing ready for action. This posture is part of what has made it increasingly popular as a competitor in dog shows.

Many people enjoy having the Brittany as a companion animal. But these dogs are equally utilized for hunting and show purposes. Originally dubbed the “Brittany Spaniel,” the name Spaniel was dropped because of the Brittany’s similarity in hunting style to the pointer breeds.

These dogs look very much like the Welsh Springer Spaniel, and many believe that the breed was mixed with English pointing dogs around the turn of the 20th century. But as the records on its breeding history are nowhere to be found, the origins of the Brittany may never be known for certain.

A mid-sized breed, the Brittany is about 17.5" to 20.5" tall at the shoulder. These dogs have long legs and either orange on white or liver on white coloring.

A quick and agile animal, the Brittany is fun for taking on walks, but needs an appropriately fitted collar and a good leash. The Brittany is a cheerful and confident companion, making it an ideal dog for a family.
