Originating in Germany in the 1800s, the Boxer was built for dog fighting and hunting. Boxers were used to chase and pin down large animals to assist the hunter. Boxers are capable of capturing wild boars and even bison.

The reason for the name is somewhat surprising. As fighting dogs, the Boxer is known for actually standing on its hind legs and swinging at the other dog with its paws. This gives it the appearance of a human boxer in the ring.

Powerful for its size, the well-built Boxer is clearly athletic in nature. Used long ago as war time couriers, these fast and agile dogs are also an intelligent breed. Naturally protective and instinctively connected to their owners, Boxers can work as seeing-eye dogs for the blind.

Ironically, while this dog was built for fighting, it is one of the best family dogs available because it is both patient and protective around children. Boxers crave affection from their owners and are fun-loving dogs. They can match young children’s energy in playing.

Boxers are born with either brindle or fawn coloring, standing around two feet tall at the shoulders. They would do well with a Boxer-specific collar and a good leash, as they require daily exercise to stay healthy. Boxers are excellent companion animals and guard dogs, making them one of the most popular breeds in the United States.
