The Bernese Mountain Dog comes from the mountains of Switzerland. While there are three other breeds of Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Bernese is unique for its long silky fur. Originally a working dog in this cold region, the Bernese did droving and drafting with skill and fortitude.

The AKC first acknowledged the Bernese Mountain Dog as a working farm dog in 1937. These dogs are capable of pulling carts, steering herds of cattle, and acting as guard dogs. The tri-colored black, white, and rust dogs are friendly and calm.

On the other hand, with all this ability does come some maintenance. The Bernese needs consistent work with obedience training, regular brushing, and plenty of exercise to be content and healthy. They are a good family dog because of their easygoing and amiable manner.

A larger breed, the Bernese Mountain Dog measures from 23" to 27.5” tall, at the shoulders. Their famed expression is that of intelligence, gentleness, and liveliness.

With a neck that is actually quite muscular, and a strong broad chest underneath, some collars are custom made for the breed. A Bernese, when out on a walk and approached by strangers, should confidently stand steady, but may not respond readily to a stranger’s attention. The Bernese Mountain Dog stands out from the rest as a large and agile, yet kind and protective dog.
